About the project

Three narratives of Ukrainian teenagers, facing the devastating effects of war, who seek solace in the arts as a substitute for their lost childhood. The stories revolve around the concept of a home built from memories, resurrected from ruins, and transformed into a fortress.

Synopsis

Four boys from eastern Ukraine, now in Nida, Lithuania, form a rock band in their temporary home “Medikas,” a former hospital turned shelter for Ukrainians. Senya, Timofey, Kirill, and Artem bond over music as they prepare for a New Year’s concert. Despite their friendship and shared rehearsals, Senya struggles with loneliness, missing his grandmother and the familiar surroundings of home.

Anna, a fourteen-year-old from Saltivka, escaped a missile-hit apartment that left her family’s building split in half. Now in Lithuania, Anna pours her experiences into her art. She prepares for the graduation waltz and paints evocative pictures of destroyed houses, giving them human traits. She also keeps a diary, recording the harrowing events she has lived through since the invasion.

A seven-child family near the Kherson airport survived the occupation in their small house, which is still under renovation. The children, ranging from six-year-old Yulia to fifteen-year-old Yarik, study remotely, often with the sound of explosions in the background. They care for abandoned animals, bake bread, sketch for animation, and play football on weekends, finding joy and solidarity amidst the chaos. Their fragile home has become a fortress and a symbol of their resilience, with snowflakes made during the occupation still hanging from the ceiling as they await the next New Year.
